Sustainable
Development
As
issues such as environmental protection and global warming take an
increasingly high profile internationally, the concept of Sustainable
Development is gaining greater attention and focus. New
approaches to old and new problems are being sought to protect the
environment for future generations, whilst at the same time ensuring that
economic activity continues to prosper. This is seen internationally
as the only way that we can ensure continued future economic growth
world-wide.
|
|
Sustainable
Development is seen as planning for progress in a manner that integrates
immediate and longer-term needs, with local and global needs.
Social, economic and environmental concerns are considered to be
inseparable and interdependent components needed for successful
development. These new challenges apply to all sectors of our
economy and society. Recent
initiatives launched by the United Nations at a world-wide level (such as
Agenda 21) encourage companies, governments, institutions and individuals,
to incorporate the principles of Sustainable Development more fully into
their activities and lives.
One
of the most pressing issues for Sustainable Development in the 21st
century is climate change. The rising levels of CO2 and
other greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere have raised serious
concerns about the stability of our climate. This has been brought
about, primarily, from the burning of fossil fuels and changes in land
use. In order to deal with this problem, organisations are being
asked to tackle this global challenge on a local level.
